How does one care for these plants?
Maintenance practices
- Lighting
They thrive well in partial lighting conditions but can tolerate full sunlight except for the noon hot sunlight. Too much light burns the leaves while less light leads to poor colour development.
- Temperature
Medium temperature of close to 65⁰ Fahrenheit are allowed. Any temperature below or above that retards the growth of these plants.
- Irrigation
Water the plants thoroughly to avoid wilting. When the soil starts drying up, add more water. However, remember that too much watering will drown the healthy roots and weaken the plants growth thus you need to regulate.
- Fertilizer application
Use a water-soluble plant fertilizer to feed these plants. Do not apply any fertilizer during cold seasons.
- Pruning
Using a sharp knife, you cut the upper part of the plant anywhere along the main stem. This will stimulate growth and rejuvenation of the remaining part. The cut off part is then planted elsewhere.
- Propagation
The cut off part is dipped in a rooting hormone containing a fungicide. This fungicide is used I order to prevent root rot. It is then planted in soil.
